Treasurer says time is running out to pay your property taxes

The first half of your Missoula County property tax bill is due by Nov. 30, says Missoula County Clerk and Recorder Tyler Gernant.

KGVO met with Gernant on Tuesday who provided details.

“The deadline is November 30,” Gernant said. “It’s a good thing to remember that even though the deadline is November 30th, it means you can either come into our office and pay before 5:00 p.m. or pay online, or get postmarked. before November 30, and that too matters. So there are plenty of ways to do it. If you forget until the very last minute, there are still ways to do it even after our office is technically closed. “

Gernant said penalties are imposed if property taxes are not paid on time.

“If you don’t pay by that deadline, an automatic two percent penalty is applied,” he said. “So 2% of the amount that would otherwise be owed is added to that amount, and on top of that, there’s 10% a year that accumulates on that in interest. It is therefore important that you get paid, otherwise you will be paying a lot more than you should.

Gernant said those who wish to protest their property tax assessment must follow strict protocol.

“A lot of people will pay conditional thinking that it fixes the problem one way or another, but unless you are planning to take action in district court or have already filed an appeal. of your assessment with the Revenue Department or the County Tax Appeal Board, then it’s usually too late to pay your taxes under protest, ”he said.

Gernant said property taxes are used to pay for many essential services.

“The vast majority of property taxes are actually used to pay for public safety,” he said. “They’re going to pay the cops and firefighters. A lot of that goes to the Department of Health, which has obviously been pretty vital over the last couple of years, I would say with the pandemic, and then a lot of it goes to paying schools so that our kids get a high school education. high level and are ready to go out on their own in the world.

Again, Missoula County property taxes are due on or before November 30.
