FDA Issues Warning About Potentially Dangerous Avocado Stockpiling Trend

When it comes to storing avocados, my choice would be the trash can. I can’t stand them. Well, I can’t because I’ve never tasted it. I just can’t bring myself to try something that looks as questionable as a lawyer.

My family loves avocados, however, and eats them all the time. My daughter puts it on toast, my son-in-law makes a killer guacamole (they say, LOL), and my husband puts avocado in his smoothies.

So, of course, they’ve all been trying to figure out the best way to store the baby poo-like fruit. I usually stay out of it, but I saw a video on Tik Tok claiming to have figured out how to stop our avocados from browning in just a few days.

Sounds like a great idea, right? Bad. I saw a article which was about the new avocado stockpiling trend and the FDA says it’s a terrible idea.

The main concern is the possibility that residual human pathogens (such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella) that may reside on the surface of avocado can potentially multiply during storage when submerged in water.

I guess the Tik Tok influencer saw the same post because he made a second video to take back what he said in his first video.

Ok, what should we do with our lawyers? Apart from the trash can, I mean.

How to Properly Store an Avocado

According lawyersofmexico.com,

With the flesh side down, place the avocado in the container, cover and place in the refrigerator. This will keep the avocado from browning for about two days. If your avocado is already ripe but you don’t intend to eat it yet, simply place the whole fruit in the refrigerator.

Is it better to leave an avocado outside or in the fridge?

It depends on whether the avocado is cut in half or not.

Until fully ripe, avocados should be stored at room temperature. Placing an unripe avocado in the fridge will slow down the ripening process, but the same concept applies to ripe avocados: put them in the fridge to keep them fully ripe longer.
