Classic Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

Gather the ingredients for the classic cream cheese frosting

To make cream cheese frosting, you will only need a handful of classic ingredients, including a block of softened cream cheese, softened butter, vanilla extract, a pinch of salt and powdered sugar.

Start by mixing everything except the powdered sugar.

Shelbert uses a stand mixer to make her icing, but she notes that “if you don’t have a stand mixer, a hand mixer works just as well and gives the same result.” So, in the bowl of a stand mixer or a separate large bowl, add the cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and salt. Whisk these ingredients together over medium-high heat for about a minute, until creamy and incorporated. Now it’s time to sweeten things up. Start by adding half the powdered sugar, so 1 ½ cups, and mix it on medium-high speed until fully incorporated. Add the rest of the sugar and continue mixing for about a minute more, until you have a smooth, creamy, and sweet frosting.

As soon as you are done mixing the sugar, you can immediately use this frosting, however you like. Shelbert has used some to top cinnamon rolls, but notes that “this frosting is really versatile.” She suggests adding it to sweet breads, like pumpkin or banana bread, or on classic carrot cake. “Plus, it can be used to frost cookies or as a filling for sandwich cookies, like cinnamon raisin cookies,” she says.
